And possibly a few more…

Several years ago, National Public Radio began producing a series of rather intimate (read: cramped) video-taped performances in All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen’s office. An incredibly wide variety of musicians including Adele, Wilco, The Decemberists, Steve Earle, Jackson Browne, Bob Mould, Lucinda Williams, Neko Case, Billy Bragg, Pixies, Richard Thompson, Iron and Wine,  Chick Corea & Gary Burton, Trey Anastasio, Yo La Tengo, Bill Frisell, Robert Cray, T-Pain, The Kronos Quartet, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the Sun Ra Arkestra, The Zombies, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens, Ralph Stanley, Andrew W.K., Run the Jewels, Eddie Palmieri, Blue Man Group, Lyle Lovett, Peter Frampton, and Weird Al Yankovic, and countless others have all crammed into the studio to perform.

Tiny Desk artists that you may have caught at Mohawk over the years include Andrew Bird, Drive-By Truckers, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Son Little, San Fermin, Okkervil River, Frank Turner, OK Go, Protomartyr, Nathaniel Rateliff, Beauty Pill, Justin Townes Earle, Daniel Johnston, Kelly Hogan, and Beach Slang.  All past performances are all archived here:

In 2015, NPR and the Lagunitas Brewing Company offered the opportunity for independent musicians to submit a video of themselves performing a single, original song at a desk.  The winner got to record their own Tiny Desk Concert at the NPR studios in Washington, DC and to perform at an NPR event at SXSW in Austin.

Our main sound guy, Tony DeRosa, caught wind of the fact that quite a few local musicians had entered, so we decided to track down as many as we could and put together a night of them performing in a make-shift office on our stage on the day when NPR announced the winners. We had nine participants that year.

This year is now the 4th year for the Tiny Desk Contest, and you can see a wide variety of musicians vying for a chance at their very own Tiny Desk Concert here:

The winner of their very first contest in 2015 just took home a Grammy.

Once again, we’re doing our own show for the local entrants. There was an amazing response to the contest this year, both nationally, and also locally, with over two dozen WNY acts entered. We put the call out to the locals and currently have no fewer than eight acts scheduled for our show so far. You’ll see some familiar faces, as well as a few people making their Mohawk debut. It’ll be starting at 7:00 pm sharp, with everybody doing 20 to 30 minute sets.

You can see all of the local submissions here:,%20ny

And we’ll have something from Tiny Desk Contest sponsor Lagunitas on tap…
